Health and Attainment Over the Lifecourse: Friday, May 16, 2008
This multidisciplinary conference featured economists, sociologists, demographers, and developmental psychologists who discussed new research on the reciprocal pathways linking health and attainment across the lifespan. Speakers paid careful attention to important questions such as: (a) the extent to which observed linkages can be interpreted as causal; (b) what mechanisms or processes may explain these linkages; and (c) how such linkages might vary in strength and form across different subgroups of the population. The speakers referred to their new work using a variety of high-quality longitudinal data sets, including the U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics, the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, the British National Child Development Survey, and the New Zealand Dunedin Survey. The conference also featured a policy-focused plenary session by the Chief of Staff of the Chicago Public Schools, who discussed the interrelationships between, and policy missions of, the institutions serving low-income children’s educational and health needs in the City of Chicago.
