Welcome to the website for Cells
to Society (C2S): The Center on Social Disparities and Health.
The goal of C2S is to integrate the social, behavioral,
biomedical, and life sciences to illuminate pathways contributing
to health inequalities.
The hope is that by working together in an interdisciplinary setting, Northwestern scientists will be able to provide more complete answers to how social contexts affect physical and mental health as well as cognitive achievement at the population level. The long-term goal of C2S is to reduce health disparities through new research findings that improve practice and policy.
Our website serves as a portal to such an
integrative environment. We feature research and recent publications
of our faculty, and information about collaborative efforts with
related centers. I invite you to join our intellectual community
as we grow and develop into a national resource. Stay tuned for
news on our upcoming speaker series, faculty searches, conferences,
and workshops.

Background
The social and cultural contexts in which we live are critical determinants of human development and health. Notably, the United States is characterized by profound disparities in these contexts, as evidenced by inequalities in economic resources, education, employment, and housing.
But we do not know enough about the biological processes and related pathways through which such disparities influence our development, health, and psychological well-being.
Across the university, scholars are embarking
on groundbreaking research to explore the biological, psychological,
and social pathways linking socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity,
culture, and social relationships with healthy human development,
psychological well-being, and longevity. Cells to Society provides
an interactive home for Northwestern researchers.

Location
C2S is a joint effort of both the
Evanston and Chicago Northwestern communities. Northwestern University
is known for its collaborative culture, and one premier example
of multidisciplinary collaboration is the Institute
for Policy Research (IPR), comprised of scholars across campus
with policy-related research programs. Cells to Society (C2S):
The Center on Social Disparities and Health, based within IPR,
will build upon and expand IPR's interdisciplinary experience by
linking health and social scientists across Northwestern University.
