Our Mission

The Institute for Policy Research (IPR) is an interdisciplinary public policy research institute founded in 1968 at Northwestern University. Our mission is to stimulate and support excellent social science research on significant public policy issues and to disseminate the findings widely -- to students, scholars, policymakers, and the public at large.

People

Currently, 34 faculty fellows, and 53 faculty associates, together with research associates,
visiting scholars, postdoctoral fellows and graduate research assistants, are drawn largely from sociology, political science, economics, education, communications, law, and management. They participate in research projects, seminars, conferences, policy briefings, and workshops.

Publications

Faculty research is published widely in books, journal articles, chapters, monographs, and reports. It is disseminated through IPR's working paper series, an annual brochure,
newsletters, and policy briefs.

Events

IPR sponsors or co-sponsors several dozen colloquia each year, in addition to conferences,
policy briefings, Distinguished Public Policy Lectures, and workshops. In 2005-06, IPR was proud to organize three policy briefings on the social safety net, community change in Chicago, and children's achievement, thanks to a generous grant from the Joyce Foundation. The Institute welcomed Heidi Hartmann as its Distinguished Public Policy Lecturer, and three authors and journalists to campus. IPR supports an undergraduate lecture series that has looked at racial inequality, healthcare reform, and No Child Left Behind.

Research

IPR research falls broadly into seven program areas:
