Returning students are defined as students who, in the past, were accepted and enrolled at Northwestern University but withdrew from NU for medical leave, financial burdens, family emergencies or required military service. These students' SEVIS records were terminated based on "Authorized Early Withdrawal".
Your first step will be to request re-entry to NU with the Registrar's Office. Please see the Registar's website for information on your re-entry here.
Once your re-entry has been approved by your program/department, please complete the I-20 Request Form or DS-2019 Request Form and attach supplemental documents (financial documents and copy of passport) and send directly to your assigned IO Advisor at least three months before the start of the quarter you hope to return to NU.
In addition to the I-20/DS-2019 Request, the International office also requires an email from your academic advisor or dean indicating your approved re-entry and the estimated amount of time needed to complete the degree requirements.
Once your I-20 or DS-2019 has been issued, you must complete the Document Mailing Request so that the IO can mail your document directly to you.
Please follow the I-20/DS-2019 Requests steps for "New Students". Returning students must also check-in with the International Office upon their arrival to NU.
Please remember, you must be full-time enrolled during the first quarter you return.
