An application for reinstatement requires consultation with the IO staff. Reinstatement is the process by which F-1 and J-1 students who are currently out of status, or who were recently terminated, may apply to regain their immigration status. This procedure is very specific and the IO recommends any student who may be unsure about their current status and may be considering reinstatement to see an IO advisor as soon as possible.

A student may be in violation of his/her immigration status for one or more of the following reasons:

• Enrolling less than full-time.
• Failure to enroll without prior IO authorization.
• Changing academic level without prior IO authorization.
• Failure to apply for an I-20/DS-2019 extension before the end-date listed.
• For New and Transfer-In students, failure to Check-In at the IO within five days of arrival on-campus.

An application for Reinstatement is very detailed, and must be accurate and submitted within five months of the status violation. If you believe you may be in violation of your status, please contact the IO immediately for assistance.
