Extension

J-1 extension applications are for J-1 Exchange Visitors (EV) at Northwestern University who are receiving an extension of their employment. Your department will submit the documents for this process. There are no forms for the EV to complete.

J-1 Extension

Exchange Visitors in the respective categories are eligible for the following program durations:

  • Research Scholar/Professor: Minimum: three weeks; Maximum: five years.
  • Short-term Scholar: Minimum: none; Maximum: six months.

If an EV was subject to the 212(e), two-year home residency requirement and has not received a written waiver recommendation from the US Department of State, then he/she is not eligible for an extension beyond the current end date of his/her DS-2019.

  1. Complete the J-1 EV Information Form.
  2. Collect the documents on the J-1 EV Checklist.
  3. Submit your documents to your sponsoring department.
