Applying for a J-1

Initial J-1 applications are for foreign nationals (FN) outside the U.S. and those currently in the U.S. in other visa categories, such as F-1 or B1/B2. This type of application is referred to a Change of Status (COS) within the U.S.

Applicants outside the U.S., please complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the J-1 EV Information Form.
  2. Collect the documents on the J-1 EV Checklist.
  3. Submit your documents to your sponsoring department.

COS applicants, please complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the J-1 EV Information Form.
  2. Collect the documents on the J-1 EV Checklist.
  3. Submit your documents to your sponsoring department.
  4. After you get your DS-2019, complete the I-539 and submit it to USCIS.
