Driver's License or State ID

This webpage provides general information about the identification card and driver's license options.

  • A Driver's License is used for driving and identification and is available to those with a Social Security Number (SSN).
  • A Temporary Visitor Driver's License is used for driving only and is available to documented immigrants without a SSN.
  • A Illinois State ID is used for identification (when banking, traveling, etc.) only as is available to those with a SSN.

Temporary Driver's License (TVDL)

  • To apply, present the following documents: Proof from Social Security Office that you are ineligible for an SSN; a passport; two documents to prove your current U.S. address; and your I-20 or DS-2019.
  • Appointments must be made in advance to apply for a TVDL. Use the Secretary of State's Cyberdrive website to find a facility that issues TVDLs.
