Hosting a Lactation Room

Guidelines for Units/Schools that Wish to Host a Lactation Room

Northwestern University is committed to the benefits of supporting nursing parents at work, the laws that support it and related University best practices/policies. Through the Office of Work/Life & Family Resources and with the help of Facilities Management, lactation rooms are available to provide a private, secure space for new mothers to express milk.

Room owners tend to be departments located within the building in which a lactation room is located. The department chair or administrator typically appoints a specific individual on staff to serve as point person for the program. The point person will work with the Office of Work/Life & Family Resources and Facilities Management staff to establish a lactation room.

Lactation Room Owner agrees to the following:
• Work with the Offices of Work/Life & Family Resources and Facilities Management to ensure there is a functioning WildCARD access reader
• Work with the Office of Work/Life & Family Resources to establish an Outlook calendar for reservations
• Provide Work/Life & Family Resources staff access to the lactation room
• Agree to identify a local contact who will have access to the room and report to Facilities Management any maintenance or cleaning needs.

If your school/department wishes to host a room, review the design guidelines for establishing a lactation room. Contact Magda Fong in the Office of Work/Life & Family Resources, if you have additional questions.
