Disability Grievances: Students

It is recommended but not required that students, staff, faculty, applicants, and student applicants first express their concerns to their supervisor, department chair, dean, or program coordinator. As a result of these discussions, including the development of strategies for empowering the individual to deal with the situation him/herself or having the person who has received the grievance take it under review, a satisfactory resolution may be readily found.

Formal Procedure

A student who wishes to file a formal grievance may do so in writing over his/her signature with:

Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access
720 University Place
Evanston, IL, 60208
Phone: 847- 491-7458
Fax: 847-467-1356

or

Vice President for student affairs
2-221 Rebecca Crown Center
633 Clark Street
Evanston, IL, 60208
Phone: 847-491-5360
Fax: 847-491-8406

All grievances shall be investigated and reviewed by the director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access or the vice president for student affairs. The purpose of the review is to determine whether or not University policy has been followed and, if not, to address the consequences that may have resulted and shall be corrected. Information relevant to the matter may be requested from the involved parties. The director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access or the Vice President for Student Affairs will promptly undertake an investigation and provide a written finding to the student upon completion of the review.

Retaliation

The University prohibits retaliation against anyone for registering a complaint pursuant to these policies, assisting another in making a complaint, or participating in an investigation under the policies. Anyone experiencing any conduct that he or she believes to be retaliatory should immediately report it to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access, University Sexual Harassment Prevention Office, and the Division of Student Affairs (student-to-student incidents).

Appeal

Appeal

A student who believes that a grievance has not been resolved to his or her satisfaction after a review is conducted may appeal the outcome to:

Provost
2-221 Rebecca Crown Center
633 Clark Street
Evanston, IL, 60208
Phone: 847-491-5117
Fax: 847-491-1630

Such appeal shall be in writing and signed by the student. The provost shall make a determination on the appeal and promptly inform the student in writing of that determination.
