Designating Life Insurance Beneficiaries Online

Effective July 22nd, 2008, a new feature has been added to HRIS Self Service enabling you to view and change your beneficiary designations online for Northwestern University sponsored life insurance plans.

To access this new Self Service feature,

  • Go to the following link: https://nuhr.northwestern.edu
  • Logon using your NetID and password
  • Once you have logged on, click on the Self Service link and then the Benefits link listed in the Self Service Menu box
  • You should then click on the Update NU Life Ins Beneficiary link in the Benefits menu box

You may view and either update or add beneficiary designations for the Northwestern University employer paid Basic Life Insurance and employee paid Supplemental Life Insurance Plans. These two plans make life insurance benefit payments to designated beneficiaries in the event of your death. Spouse and Dependent Child Life Insurance plans will not appear on this page. If you are enrolled in these plans, you (the employee), are the designated beneficiary and no beneficiary designation is required.

To update your Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation (NMFF) life insurance plans, please contact the NMFF Benefits Department.

It is important to review this information as the beneficiary designations you made when you were hired or during an Open Enrollment period may no longer be current due to a family status change. Once your beneficiary designations are fully processed, you will receive an email message from the Benefits Division confirming the change has been made. The message will indicate the effective date of the change.

Your new designations replace any designations you may have previously made on paper or online .

A tutorial, frequently asked questions, glossary of terms and other information is being made available online to assist faculty and staff understand how to use this new Self Service feature. In addition, the Benefits Division staff is available to assist individuals. The frequently asked questions is accessible at http://www.northwestern.edu/hr/benefits/plans/life/faq.html or contact the Benefits Division at 847 491-7513.

Step-by-Step instructions for using this new feature in Self Service can be found at http://www.northwestern.edu/hr/hris/selfservice/updatelifeben/lifeinsbenupdate.htm
