Employee Eligibility

This benefit is available for full-time, benefits-eligible faculty and staff at the University.

  1. Participant must be a full-time, benefits-eligible employee AND
  2. Participant must have completed at least three years of full-time, benefits-eligible service prior to the beginning of the term AND
  3. Participant must be earning less than $100,000 gross annually AND
  4. Participant must be actively working and the University payroll.

Allowable Expenses

This benefit is for undergraduate and graduate level courses taken at Northwestern University and billed through CAESAR. The benefit is limited to tuition only. A list of some eligible Northwestern programs can be found here.

Annual Benefit Amount

The benefit covers 90% of tuition with no annual limit, whereby any amount over $5,250 is considered taxable income.

Taxation

All Employee Tuition Benefits above $5,250 received per calendar year must be taxed as non-cash compensation and added to an employee's taxable wages. For example, if your tuition benefits for the spring quarter are $4,000 and you receive an additional $2,000 in assistance for the summer quarter, the $750 ($6,000-$5,250 = $750) would be taxed evenly between your July-September paychecks. Application Procedure

  1. Requires an application each calendar year.
  2. By submitting an application, you are agreeing to the following statement: I certify that the information provided is correct. I agree to comply with the provisions of the Northwestern Educational Assistance plan as described in the plan document. I agree to pay, at the latest, by the due date on my student account for all tuition, fees, and other related educational costs that are not covered by this benefit plan. I acknowledge that all applicable taxes will be taken from my paycheck(s), in accordance with IRS regulations. (For student account questions, contact Student Finance.   3. Employees must submit an online application each calendar year using Plan ID: "EER-Enhanced Employee Reduced" and provide the following information:
    1. Your student ID - generally your employee ID (7-digit number on your WildCARD),
    2. Grade Level - undergraduate: freshman through senior; graduate: post-grad,
    3. Northwestern school, and,
    4. Program of study.

Satellite Offices

Eligibility

  • Participant must be a full-time, benefits-eligible employee AND
  • Participant must have completed at least three years of full-time, benefits-eligible service prior to the beginning of the term AND
  • Participant must be earning less than $100,000 gross annually AND
  • Participant must be actively working and on the University payroll AND
  • Participant's customary work place is located more than 200 miles from Chicago.

Benefit

  • Eligible for Enhanced Employee Reduced Tuition benefits at institutions other than Northwestern University.
  • Apply each term online via myHR Self Service using Plan ID "EERS - Employee Reduced Satellite" and providing the following information:
    • Your Student ID - from your school of study,
    • Grade Level - undergraduate: freshman through senior; graduate: post-grad,
    • Grade Report,
    • Itemized Bill, and,
    • Proof of Full Payment.
  • Upon approval of the application, the University will issue the benefit directly to the employee.
  • The amount of the benefit granted will not exceed the amount of the corresponding benefit applied to Northwestern University tuition.
