Student Service Aide Fall 2017

Undergraduate work-study students are essential to supporting the “behind the scenes” work of Health Promotion and Wellness. Tasks may include reception desk duties, clerical support, programming support, data entry, copying/collating, conference room support, and other related tasks.

Graduate interns support specific programs and services within HPaW on a part time basis. 

Alcohol Education and Outreach Graduate Intern

The Alcohol Education and Outreach Graduate Intern is a paid paraprofessional position that works collaboratively with the HPaW professional staff to implement evidence-based strategies in alcohol prevention guided by a harm reduction approach. This is a 20 hour per week commitment (September to June) which will require some evening and weekend hours, in accordance with the graduate intern’s availability and current departmental need.  The primary responsibility for this position is to co-advise our WATCH peer education group and coordinate the Red Watch Band Bystander Intervention Training program

Responsibilities may include:

  • co-advising WATCH peer educators, including aiding in recruitment, training, program development, etc. 
  • managing the Red Watch Band training online registration process, including communication with registrants
  • aiding in marketing the department and program via various forms of campus and social media
  • engaging in learning outcome assessment 

Lastly, the graduate intern will participate in the NU Community Alcohol Coalition, which utilizes an environmental management approach to reduce high risk drinking and its resulting harm. The intern will both serve as a graduate student representative on the coalition and gain an understanding of the elements of a comprehensive campus-based alcohol prevention and intervention plan. Contact Kevin Meier for additional information.

Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention (BASICS) Graduate Internship

The Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention (BASICS) Intern is an unpaid paraprofessional position that works collaboratively with the professional staff of HPaW to support programs designed to reduce the harm associated with alcohol and other drug use among Northwestern students. The largest component of this position is the provision of Brief Alcohol or other drug Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS), a psycho-educational intervention that uses motivational interviewing skills and a harm-reduction approach. Additional opportunities to lead group-based interventions are included in the internship experience. Group and individual supervision is provided throughout the internship. Contact Angela Mitchell for additional information.
