Urgent Medical Transport Services

Northwestern University Health Service provides limited services in response to requests to coordinate medically-necessary transportation via local providers of taxi service for the urgent medical needs of Northwestern students.

  • This service is available to Northwestern students who need urgent care at the Health Service-Evanston, the Evanston Hospital Emergency Room, or the Northwestern Medicine Immediate Care clinic in downtown Evanston.
  • This service is limited to Northwestern University students who live on campus or within the NU walking zone (Central Street to the north; Ridge Avenue and the Metra tracks to the west; Lake Street to the south; and Lake Michigan to the east in Evanston) and who are otherwise unable to get to the care facility due to illness or injury.
  • This service is not available for routine or non-urgent medical care.
  • The Health Service will reimburse students for taxi service authorized by NUHS for medical transport upon presentation of the original receipt that details the charges and date service was provided along with supporting documentation of the medical-necessity of any taxi service provided.

Students who are acutely and severely ill or injured and those with a life-threatening emergency should call 911 and request an ambulance.

During regular business hours when the Health Service is open for patient care:

  • Call the appointment desk at 847.491.2204 to discuss your medical problem with the nurse on call or an appropriate member of the Health Service staff.
  • If medical transportation is authorized by NUHS, you will be provided instructions to coordinate your transportation via taxi.

After regular business hours when the Health Service is closed:

  • Call the Health Service at 847.491.8100 to connect with the After Hours Nurse On Call line.
  • If transportation is authorized by the Health Service, you may use any taxi service. The student is responsible for paying the cost of the ride and must request a receipt from the taxi driver with the date and the cost of the ride.

Transportation to return from the hospital after an Emergency Room visit:

  • There is no need to contact the physician on call to arrange transportation from the hospital (Evanston or St. Francis only) to your local residence. The hospital can coordinate requesting a taxi. The student is responsible for paying for the taxi ride and must request a receipt with the cost and date of the ride.

For both situations above for medical transportation after regular business hours, and transportation to return from the hospital after an emergency room visit:

  • The original hard copy of the taxi receipt along with documentation that provides evidence of the medical necessity for the hospital visit (e.g. copy of discharge instructions) must be presented within 10 business days to Health Service Administration, 633 Emerson Street, Room 1.118 to request reimbursement. This process takes approximately 2 weeks to receive payment).

Unauthorized use of taxi services will result in charges being billed to the student tuition account.
