Air Conditioning/Heating
Engelhart Hall
Air conditioning and heating for apartments in Engelhart is provided through
window and baseboard units. At one end of the baseboard unit is a set of three
switches marked "Off", "Heat", and "Cool". Residents
should select from one of these three options and then use the controls on the
window unit to control apartment temperature. Please feel free to contact the
front desk for further information or assistance.
McManus Living-Learning Center
Air conditioning for apartments in McManus is supplied through window units.
Heat is supplied through radiators. Controls for each are available to regulate
apartment temperature. Please feel free to contact the front desk for further
information or assistance.
Chicago weathers can be quite cold, and residents may find
it helpful to cover their air conditioning units with plastic
during winter months in order to prevent cold breezes from
entering. Graduate Housing will supply plastic sheeting as
well as tape for residents wishing to do so.
Cots
A limited number of cots are available for loan to residents
through the front desks
at McManus and the Maintenance Office at Engelhart. Custodial/Maintenance/Pest
Control
Requests for custodial or maintenance services should be made through the front
desk. Most work requests can be handled within a day or two at most. Occasionally
a request may take longer, and residents will be notified if that is the case.
There is a regular schedule for pest control services in the buildings. Contact
the front desk should you wish to schedule an additional treatment.
Furniture
Apartments are rented furnished. Due to a lack of storage space no University
furniture may be removed from any apartment. Furniture provided for lounges and
other commons spaces is not to be moved to apartments for any reason.
Front Desks
The Engelhart front desk is open weekdays from 8:30am to 8pm and on Saturdays
from 10am to 2pm. The McManus front desk is open weekdays from 8:30am to 10pm
and on weekends from 10am to 8pm.
Garbage/Recycling
There is a garbage room located on each floor of the residence halls. Please
take your trash to the cans in tightly tied bags for disposal. There are also
recycling stations on each floor of the residence halls. These bins are for paper,
aluminum, glass, and plastic.
Housekeeping Services
Hallways and commons areas (including washrooms) are cleaned daily. Housekeepers
are not permitted to clean occupied apartments.
Laundry Rooms
The laundry room in Engelhart Hall is located in the basement. The laundry rooms
in McManus are located on the 1st floor. Laundry rooms have washers and dryers,
which can be operated using coins or using the WildCard.
Light Bulbs
Residents are responsible for purchasing their own replacement light bulbs for
lamps that belong to them. Bulbs for light fixtures and lamps provided by the
University will be replaced by the University. While not specifically prohibited,
the use of halogen lamps is discouraged as a matter of helping assure the safety
of all residents.
Lockouts
Residents of both buildings should contact the front desk for assistance with
lockouts during the day. At times when the desk is closed Engelhart residents
should contact the community assistant on duty. Schedules are posted on the bulletin
board on the first floor. McManus residents should contact any member of the
student director staff. Please keep in mind the community assistants and student
directors are themselves students. While they are available to assist if need
be, they would also greatly appreciate residents respecting their schedule and
privacy whenever possible.
Lost Keys
Residents who lose their keys will be charged a lock replacement fee. Contact
the front desks for further information should you lose your keys.
Mail, Registered Mail, and Packages
Mail is delivered daily to the residence halls with the exception of Sundays
and holidays. We try to have all first class mail distributed by mid-afternoon
and all other mail distributed by 5pm. Each building receives a tremendous volume
of mail daily, and we do occasionally make a mistake in handling the mail. If
you receive a piece of mail that is not yours, please return it to the front
desk.
Registered mail and packages will be held at the desk and a notice put in your
mailbox notifying you of their receipt. CODs will only be accepted by prior arrangement
with the front desk.
Security
The exterior doors of both residence halls are locked throughout
the day. This is for the safety and security of our residents.
Please use your key to enter the building during these
hours, and please don't allow persons you don't know to
enter the building either by opening the doors or by allowing
them to follow you through the doors. It is very important
that the exterior doors (including fire escape doors)
not be propped open at any time.
Lock your apartment door whenever you leave no matter for how short a time.
It is also a good idea to lock your room door when you are sleeping or napping.
Report any suspicious person or activity immediately to University Police or
the front desk. Common sense and a willingness to help with these basic safety
precautions will go a long way in preventing crimes of opportunity against you
or your fellow residents.
Storage
Limited storage space is available in both residence halls. Residents of Engelhart
Hall should contact the front desk for additional information. Residents of McManus
should contact any member of the student director staff.
Study Rooms
The first floor lounge in Engelhart Hall includes several smaller rooms, which
may be used for quiet study by residents. McManus features a number of group
study rooms, which may be reserved through the front desk.
Vacuum Cleaners
Vacuum cleaners are available to borrow from both front desks. There is a 1/2-hour
time limit on their use. Be sure to check to see if the bag needs emptied before
using the vacuum cleaner, and reports any problems with the machine to the front
desk when you return it.
Vending/Game Refunds
Refunds for change lost in the vending machines are available from University
Services. Information on contacting that department is available through the
front desk.
Community Assistants
and Student Directors
Engelhart's Engelhart's Community
Assistants (CA) work with an incredibly diverse group of
residents that have come from all over the world to study
a variety of disciplines at Northwestern University. Many
of the residents in Engelhart are the partners, spouses or
children of students.
The McManus Student Directors (SD)
also work with a diverse group of residents (and spouses),
but unlike the tenants of Engelhart, the McManus students
have the common bond of all being students of the Kellogg
Graduate School of Management. The role of the CA or the
SD is to serve students by:
- Presenting educational and social programming
- Serving as campus resources by answering questions and inquiries
- Ensuring good customer service is extended during the evenings and on
weekends
- Promoting safety and responsibility by monitoring the facilities
- Assisting students during emergencies or crises
Duty schedules and contact information (including pager numbers) for the community
assistants and student directors are posted at the front desk of Engelhart Hall
and the McManus Living-Learning Center.
Painting Rooms
Residents wishing to have their room painted should
note their request at the front desk. The room will be inspected by Graduate
Housing to determine the extent of the need for painting. The resident will be
notified regarding the result of that inspection as well as the schedule for
any needed painting.
