Recruitment/Intake

Recruitment and Intake Information

Fraternities and sororities conduct recruitment and intake events, activities, and informational sessions at various times during the year. Intake is the term NPHC organizations and most MGC organizations use to bring new members into an organization. In 1990, all 9 NPHC groups prohibited "pledging" and began a process called 'intake'.

The recruitment process is either council or chapter coordinated, depending on which organization you are interested in joining. However, no freshman may be in the new member process until Winter Quarter, or enter a fraternity or sorority house during the first two weeks of the academic year. Transfer, sophomore, junior, or senior students may join a fraternal organization during Fall Quarter.

For specific council recruitment and intake information see the descriptions below.

Interfraternity Council

IFC fraternities offer invitations/bids to prospective new members at the start of IFC Recruitment, which occurs during the first few weeks of January. Prior to the recruitment period, many chapters offer unique opportunities to get to know members through casual sporting events, service events, and Sunday-night dinners. Some of the activities occur during fall quarter, while others occur during Recruitment Week.

Panhellenic Association

Most women join a Panhellenic organization through participation in January's formal recruitment process. Panhellenic Recruitment occurs during the first week of January. During this time, potential new members visit each chapter house, meet women from the chapters, and learn about each organization. Chapters share information about their philanthropies, leadership opportunities, and academic and personal development programs. Once they join a chapter, new members experience a fun and educational new member period to assimilate them into Greek life.
