ARCHIVES: WHAT IS THE GENERAL FACULTY COMMITTEE? The General Faculty Committee (GFC) was a standing committee of the University Senate composed of elected representatives of the various schools of the University as well as at-large members. The GFC, as a representative of the senate, acted as an advisory group on issues of significance to the University and provided liaison between the faculty and University administration. There were several critical standing committees including: Benefits Committee, Budget and Policy Committee, Educational Affairs Committee, Faculty Governance Committee, Faculty Rights and Responsibilities Committe, Research Committee, Committee on Cause, and Committee on Committees. (for complete listing see Subcommittees) The General Faculty Committee (GFC) represented the entire faculty. Members were elected by the various schools, with the number of representatives determined by the size of the school: The Chair and Vice Chair, the latter also being the Chair Elect, were elected by the GFC membership. The Chair served for 1 year. The GFC met once a month. Issues were brought up by members, often on behalf of faculty in their constiuency. The University Administration often asked for GFC advice on issues before it. Much of the work was done by subcommittees and issues were often referred to the appropriate subcommittee which then reported back to the full GFC. Subcommittees could contain non GFC faculty as well as GFC members. The GFC often invited guests to meet with it at its monthly meetings. The GFC Executive Committee, which consisted of the subcommittee chairs plus the GFC chair and Vice Chair, met quarterly with the President and the Provost. Subcommittees met with the appropriate administration counterparts. There was a yearly half-day meeting between the GFC and the University Board of Trustees.
