PROPOSED COPYRIGHT POLICY

Several years ago, Provost Dumas asked an ad hoc faculty group to work with him on crafting a copyright policy for Northwestern University faculty. The ad hoc group included Ken Alder (History), Danny Edelson (Education and McCormick), and Mark Ratner (Chemistry).

Last year, the ad hoc faculty group reached consensus with the administration on a draft policy. Members of the ad hoc group then presented the draft policy to the General Faculty Committee.

The General Faculty Committee (GFC) has reviewed the proposed policy, and it is our belief that it is a very reasonable one. Thanks in part to the work of Professors Alder, Edelson, and Ratner, the draft policy protects the interests of faculty members while giving the University some claim in certain instances on copyrightable computer software.
