Wieboldt Hall School of Professional Studies - Phase 2

Project Status: COMPLETED

Construction Start: Fall 2014
Completion: Late 2015

Project Description & Statistics

Northwestern University intends to undertake Phase 2 of the renovation project for the School of Professional Studies (SPS), to include work on the sixth, seventh, and eighth floors of Wieboldt Hall, 340 E. Superior Street in Chicago.

Wieboldt Hall was designed by James Gamble Rogers as a classroom and office building for Northwestern’s School of Commerce. The building was completed in 1926. Located on Superior Street east of Fairbanks Court, Wieboldt Hall is eight stories tall and constructed of Indiana limestone with a steel frame structure. A two-story addition was added in the 1960’s. The building now houses the Schaffner Library, and portions of the Kellogg School of Management and the School of Continuing Studies, including classrooms, offices, and various support spaces.

Phase 1, which was completed in 2007, focused on renovating SCS classroom spaces on the fourth and fifth floors. Major infrastructure upgrades were completed to provide HVAC, electrical, plumbing, networking, fire alarm, and fire suppression systems to these floors. These systems are ready for extensions into the upper floors. Phase 1 achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold for Commercial Interiors (Cl 2.0) by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Phase 2 will focus on renovating the seventh floor to provide additional classroom capacity, and engineering of classroom technology and electrical upgrades needed to support SCS growth, especially its distance learning initiative. In addition, the sixth and eighth floors will need renovations to extend the MEP, Fire Protection, Fire Alarm and Tele-Data Communications systems to these floors, to meet building codes, and to provide space for staff displaced by classroom conversions on the seventh floor.

The area to be built out for SCS in Phase 2 comprises approximately 24,500 gsf in major renovations, and roughly 5,5000 gsf in minor/cosmetic renovations, for a total of 30,000 gsf to be renovated on the sixth, seventh, and eighth floors. The seventh floor will be converted to classroom use, and the other floors will be used for administrative office spaces.
