Wieboldt Hall School of Professional Studies

Project Status: COMPLETED

Construction Start: February 2007
Completion: March 2008

Project Description & Statistics

Located on the Alexander McKinlock Memorial Campus and designed by James Gamble Rogers, Wieboldt Hall was one of the first three buildings on the Northwestern University’s Chicago Campus. The original building, completed in 1927, consists of a basement plus eight floors; a portion of the original structure was demolished and a south addition of five floors was added in 1996. The School of Continuing Studies is one of two principal tenants in the building and occupies floor 4 thru 8.

On behalf of the School of Professional Studies (SPS), the University undertook a planning study and conceptual design analysis during the fall of 2004. The study found that the SPS classrooms were in need of modernization and programmatically did not meet the requirements of the students and faculty. In addition, SCS did not have a visible street and lobby presence. The study concluded that a major renovation of floors 4-8 and the Chicago Avenue first floor lobby, upgrades to existing MEP/FP/IT systems, and modernization of two existing elevators were required to meet the changing needs of the school. The renovation would be done as a multi-phased project.

Phase I, which commenced construction in the Fall of 2006, includes renovation of a small area of the first floor plus the entire fourth and fifth floors. The Base Project also includes installation of a roof top air handler unit, vertical distribution of all new MEP/FP/IT infrastructures, with horizontal distribution completed throughout the fourth and fifth floors, and connections for future construction capped at the sixth, seventh and eight floors, modernization of two elevators, and installation of audio visual equipment.

In addition, the renovation will fulfill Northwestern University’s mission for environmental sustainability by using recycled materials, installing energy efficient lighting and mechanical systems, recycling a portion of the demolished material, and using environmentally friendly finishes. When completed, the project will seek Leed Certification.
