Small, blue DESK-SIDE BINS for OFFICE PAPER ONLY are supplied to each faculty and staff member, and tall, thin, blue LARGE PAPER BINS are placed next to copiers. Square, blue CANS/GLASS/PLASTIC BINS are located in lounges or common areas. The custodians empty these bins and place the office paper mix in special tan-colored dumpsters, while the cans/glass/plastic mix is put in separate 55-gallon drums.

Mix 1: Cans/Glass/Plastic

Cans (Aluminum, Bi-Metal/Tin, and Steel)

  • Aluminum foil, pie plates, and dinner trays are not acceptable.
  • Labels need not be removed.

Glass (Brown, Green, and Clear)

  • Remove and dispose of all lids.
  • It's O.K. to leave on neckrings, paper and plastic labels.
  • Do not include: window glass, drinking glasses, mirrors, Pyrex cookware, light bulbs, or ceramics! They melt at a different temperature than bottle glass.

Plastic (Bottles)

  • Check the bottom of the bottle for a No. 1 or No. 2 in a triangle
  • All Bottles (i.e . Soda and Water bottles (No. 1), Milk and Juice jugs (No. 2).
  • No open-mouth containers (e.g.margarine tubs), or plastic bags.
  • Remove and dispose of all lids.
  • Please rinse all bottles

Mix 2: Office Paper

Acceptable

  • Brochures
  • Colored tablet paper
  • Computer paper
  • Copy paper
  • Envelopes (windowed o.k.)
  • Fax paper
  • Junk mail
  • Letterhead and stationary
  • Manilla folders (no colors)
  • Notebook paper
  • Post-it notes
  • Small amounts of newspaper and magazines
  • White and color bond paper

Unacceptable

  • Blueprint paper
  • Carbon paper
  • Chipboard (tablet backs)
  • Corrugated boxes
  • Foil coated papers
  • Green hanging folders
  • Laminated paper
  • Paper bags or paper cups
  • Pressboard (cereal boxes)
  • Stickers
  • Telephone books and directories
  • Tissue products
  • Tyvek (FedEx envelopes)
  • Wholte books

Mix 3: Corrugated Cardboard

There are 13 locations on the Evanston campus where you may take corrugated cardboard for recycling. Tan dumpsters at these sites are clearly marked "Corrugated Cardboard" only. The Norris Center site has no dumpster, but there is a marked area on the loading dock for cardboard.

At dormitories, cardboard recycling containers are located near the food services. These dumpsters are usually locked, but you may ask the food service staff to unlock it. Keys to the nearest cardboard dumpster are available to all fraternity and sorority houses that need them.

  • Please flatten your boxes and make sure they are empty.
  • Staples and tape do not need to be removed.
  • Please do not include ANY packing materials such as shrink wrap or "styrofoam" peanuts.

Chicago

Small, blue DESK-SIDE BINS for OFFICE PAPER ONLY are supplied to each faculty and staff member. Custodians do not empty these bins. Individuals must periodically empty their own recycling bins into BLUE BOXES and TALL, THIN CONTAINERS . These containers are normally located by photocopy machines or in hallways and are for office paper ONLY . Round, blue bins for CANS/GLASS/PLASTIC are usually located in lounges or common areas (exact locations should be posted in each building).
