To assist departments with changes and improvements to their physical environment, Facilities Management will prepare cost estimates. An estimate will help to determine if your department has sufficient funds to proceed with the work. Please note that these are not bids, but are predictions of the cost of the completed jobs. Typically, there is no charge for preparing an estimate. However, if bid specifications are needed (usually only for major renovations), the requesting department will be required to cover the cost. Requesting an EstimateIf you need building or office alterations done, please make an online estimate request through NU Portal Self-Service, and include:
If the project is complex or involves the services of more than one shop or contractor, a project engineer or manager will be assigned to prepare the estimate. We will contact your department to discuss the project with you. A written estimate will then be sent to you. Please do not send a purchase requisition to request an estimate. *If you do not have access to Self-Service through the NU Portal, please contact your department manager. [ Back to top ] Purchase RequisitionsIf you decide to proceed with the work, please reply to the Customer Service e-mail regarding your estimate. You will need to supply a NU Financials chartstring. Once this is received, the estimate will be turned into a Work Order and you will receive a Work Order number for tracking. [ Back to top ] Change OrdersOnce the project is under way, if your department makes any changes to the scope of work being done, an authorized person within your department will be asked to sign off on a Work Change Order. [ Back to top ] CostsA common complaint we receive is that our costs seem excessive. If the estimate is too high for your department's budget, we can discuss with you the scope of proposed work to see if there are any less expensive alternatives available.Work performed by Facilities Management: will comply with all state and federal regulations; will use commercial grades of building materials intended to last 100 years; and when applicable, will use established, reputable contractors who have adequate liability and workmen's compensation insurance coverage. These factors can significantly increase the cost of a project when compared to having work done in your own home. [ Back to top ] StandardsUniversity policy requires that all construction, renovation, remodeling, and maintenance of University facilities (including the hiring of architects, engineers and contractors) are the responsibility of the Office of Facilities Management. This is to ensure the achievement of high standards of safety, quality, accountability and maintainability in the University's physical facilities, as well as, to limit legal liability for all units. Facilities Management is dedicated to performing properly authorized alterations in a timely manner at the lowest possible cost, within the constraints of University regulations and state and local laws. [ Back to top ] SchedulingTo avoid unnecessary delays, please route your request through Facilities Management with as much lead time as possible to allow for necessary analysis and review to assure code compliance. If you are planning to have major work done during the summer months, we urge you to contact us no later than January. Much of the campus is quiet during the summer, but it is Facilities Management's busiest time of the year! [ Back to top ] |
