Evanston Campus power outage

July 5, 2011

While recent storms put Evanston campus buildings out of commission this weekend, Facilities Management and ComEd have restored power to all affected locations. FM and ComEd are developing a plan to avoid future power outages.

A ComEd power feeder failure caused numerous electrical disruptions and outages across the Evanston campus at 3:06 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2011. Facilities Management restored power to most of the affected research buildings by 4:00 p.m. and ComEd restored the failed feeder at approximately 8:00 p.m. that evening. By 7:30 AM on Saturday, July 2, 2011, the electricity was back on in all of the affected buildings

ComEd's repair work continued throughout the area over the weekend, and caused momentary power interruptions. Facilities Management brought in additional staff to respond to these disruptions and keep building systems operating.

Because of the recent weather-related utility power outages affecting the Evanston Campus, FM has asked ComEd to make a full assessment of their electrical distribution system. FM will work with the power company to map the high voltage feeder configuration on campus and will make modifications to minimize any future power disruptions.
