PUBLIC SERVICE & PUBLIC POLICY AWARDS

In this time of national crisis, the need for public service here and abroad is more urgent than ever before. Major foundations and funding agencies recognize the need to identify and support those whose lives promise significant contributions to the public good-those who, as the Truman Scholarship mission states, are "committed to making a difference through public service." While a few fellowships may appear to reward "activities" as opposed to service, most honor persons who are sincerely motivated to work with the most vulnerable in our world.

Some of the fellowships listed here are awarded partly on the basis of the applicant's prior record of public service. Some fund future study. Others provide a venue for further service in the US or overseas. This year NU graduates are training overseas to address questions of peace and economic justice; the problem of apathy in the political system; environmental degradation; and problems of urban housing-to name a few agendas. Additionally, four graduates are positioned in major urban centers in the US, where they are studying the crafting and implementation of public policy.
