In our rapidly expanding global economy,
the need for scholars and activists attuned to local cultures has become more
acute than ever before. Senator J. William Fulbright inaugurated the study program
that became the Fulbright Grant with the dream that cultural exchanges might replace
armed combat. Fulbright Scholars and other ambassadors for peace continue to offer
hope of rescue through concentrated dedication to building bridges between this
country and the rest of the world.
Fulbright is only one among many grants that fund budding internationalists. Rotary,
DAAD, Humboldt, NSEP and others base their programs on a resolute desire to strengthen
fragile connections between the U.S. and our current allies, as evidenced by the
current situation in Afghanistan. Our own NU Study Abroad Programs continue to
blossom, expanding programs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Apart from the evident benefits that accrue to America from the informed perspectives
of its international scholars, such programs offer venues that foster immeasurable
personal growth. Even for those who study abroad during college, a year of focused
study in another corner of the globe after graduation will alter your worldview.
You will learn to listen, absorb, exchange ideas, shake and alter your own, and
rekindle a desire to change the world. |
