FELLOWSHIPS IN THE SCIENCES

		More than the financial benefits-and they are considerable-National Science Foundation Fellowships, National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships, Hertz Fellowships, and others listed in this section confer a special measure of recognition on the recipient. They testify that, among the thousands of top candidates who applied, you have been marked out as possessing unusual promise for accomplishment in your field. A few years back, much talent deserted the Academy for dot.coms and other venues, just as the design and implementation of technical systems needed an infusion of fresh ideas. The downside to entering corporate life, if you're a dedicated researcher, is that you may discover that your heart still lies back in your lab. But follow your heart, even if this means that your life follows a strange path for a few years-a few years out, then a return back "home" to the university. Fortunately, fellowships will wait for you. Should you wish to pause for a few years-perhaps to pursue study or research overseas while you settle on a career-know that you will still be able to glean the wisdom of departmental advisers and the services of the Office of Fellowships.
