Students who major in neither technical
nor pre-professional fields very frequently find themselves in a state of acute
indecision about what to do after graduation. Staying in school, or going back
to school after a year or two in the real world, often presents itself as a default
solution; the decision to continue with academic study, however, merits more serious
reflection than this implies. It has been said that graduate school, like marriage
or life-long partnership, should be undertaken only if you cannot imagine yourself
doing anything else. Applying for a post-graduate fellowship provides an excellent
opportunity to reflect upon your plans and interests and make a thoughtful decision
about whether or not you wish to continue working in your academic field.
If you are a senior, remember that these competitions remain open to you even
if you defer applying to graduate school a number of years after you graduate.
Stay in touch with the Office of Fellowships and remember to seek the counsel
of your professors before you leave campus. Faculty in your field are among your
best resources for deciding whether or not to go to graduate school-and they are
also, of course, the people who will write your letters of recommendation. |
