CENTER PROGRAMS

The primary focus of the Center is to carry out externally funded research on biological rhythms. Section 5 outlines the major initial research objectives of the Center for Sleep & Circadian Biology (CSCB). Other activities of the center include:

Serving as consultants for a broad range of industries that seek to use information about biological rhythms for improving human health, safety, performance and productivity.

Serving as members of various government panels.

Gaining support for the training of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students.

Organizing lectures and symposia which serve to educate individuals about biological rhythms.

Organizing symposia that bring together investigators from other universities and institutions who have mutual research interests with Center investigators.

Generating and supporting new initiatives by non-Center faculty at Northwestern University in the field of biological rhythms at both the basic science and clinical levels.

Supporting and fostering research and clinical studies with investigators at other universities and institutions who share similar interests.

Using the subject matter of circadian rhythms and an integrated research team to teach undergraduate non-science majors about creative scientific processes and how new knowledge is gained at American Research Universities.

Many of the CSCB programs are enhanced and facilitated by the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Biological Timing. This NSF Center sponsors a variety of activities at the four participating universities which involve faculty at the University of Virginia, Rockefeller University, Brandeis University as well as Northwestern University.
