Counseling and Psychological Services

Applicants must have a completed doctorate degree from an APA accredited program in counseling or clinical psychology prior to the fellowship starting date. A completed psychology internship from an APA accredited site is also required. Qualified candidates should have strong clinical skills in differential lengths of treatment, assessment, crisis intervention, and supervision of trainees. It is preferred that candidates have counseling center experience and that they understand outreach and consultation programs, and have specialized experiences in the assessment/treatment with eating disorders, with student athletes, and/or with substance abuse. The program is for one year with a starting date near the end of August each year. The position carries a stipend of $27,000 with medical and vacation benefits.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is located adjacent to the Health Service but operates as an independent counseling center. The unit has a long history of extensive training, with an APA accredited pre-doctoral internship site. A full range of clinical, training, and developmental services are provided as well as a 24-hour rotational on-call system for after hours emergencies. CAPS is committed to diversity in all forms and participates in continuing professional development in this area. Because the length of treatment at CAPS is limited to 12 sessions, CAPS emphasizes training in brief therapy although selected longer term cases are available to trainees and Postdoctoral Fellows. Additionally, CAPS offers an extensive group therapy program without treatment limits, a stress clinic, and other short-term developmental programs. CAPS has 15 full time professionals, and the staff includes 11 psychologists, 1 licensed clinical social worker, 3 psychiatrists, and two postdoctoral fellows. CAPS also provides training to three full-time psychology interns and four to six part-time psychology externs.

The fellow is expected to provide individual and group counseling services, as well as intake assessment, telephone triage, crisis intervention, emergency on-call services, developmental programming, training and supervision activities, outreach, and consultation with systems, and all other administrative activities including local clinical research in which the staff participate. The fellow also is a member of the CAPS Training Committee and the Intern Selection Committee. The fellow will also gain experience coordinating one of three CAPS staffing teams that are responsible for disposition of all CAPS clients. Fellows receive two hours of individual clinical supervision per week and an additional hour of group supervision in the areas of supervision and psychiatric consultation on a weekly basis.
