  • Listen. Don't rush to fix, advise, correct, or disagree--just listen.
  • Empathize. In other words, try to put yourself in their shoes.
  • Normalize. Refer to the normal needs everyone has, during stressful times, to talk with someone he or she can trust.
  • Remember your role. Your job is to provide support and to make referrals when support isn't enough. Don't get more involved than feels comfortable or appropriate.

If you think a student is out of control, violent, and/or is imminently a danger to self and/or others, then immediate intervention is needed. Such examples would include, but not be limited to, times when a student threatens suicide or homicide, or physically harms self and/or others.

Call the University Police at 911 on campus or 847-491-3456 for Evanston and 312-503-8314 for Chicago. Report your concern, the student's name, and where the student can be found at that time. If necessary, the University Police can escort the student to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Please also call CAPS, (847) 491-2151 or the after-hours crisis line at (847) 491-8100, so that we can assist the University Police or alert the emergency room.
