Direct Service Activities
Clinical Service
The primary focus of the practicum is on individual psychotherapy of differential lengths of treatment. Emphasis is placed on accurate assessment within the first few sessions so that a comprehensive treatment plan may be carried out within a brief therapy model. Externs generally carry nine individual cases per week. In addition, externs receive training in intake assessments and provide one hour a week of intake availability, to begin at the discretion of their primary supervisors. Externs work cooperatively with the staffing team for case disposition of their intakes. Externs are responsible for case management and system linkage, client advocacy, and record documentation as required in their therapeutic work.
Consultation and Outreach
Externs co-facilitate psychoeducational workshops with senior staff, post-docs, and/or interns. Early on in the training year, Externs participate in the training orientation for Residential Life's staff. Externs are invited to seek additional opportunities for outreach programs throughout the academic year.
