About Us

Welcome from the Executive Director

john dunkle 2014Welcome to the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Northwestern University (NU).  As we begin the 2013-2014 academic year, the CAPS staff and I would like to welcome back returning students and to send a special greeting to the new undergraduate, graduate, and professional students just starting at NU.  The services that CAPS offers are designed to assist students, mainly through individual and small group interventions, in overcoming obstacles so that they may achieve their academic and other personal developmental goals. Moreover, CAPS provides its services with a deep appreciation for and consideration of individuals within a multiculturally diverse world. Students utilize our services for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to, academic concerns, relationship issues, general stress and anxiety, depression, and body image issues.  In short, one does not have to be coping with a major mental illness to reach out to CAPS.

I encourage you to take a look at our various CAPS webpages to find useful information about our services and other self-help resources.  CAPS also offers a variety of outreach and educational programs that provide students with an opportunity to learn about typical areas of concerns for all students, such as stress management, peak performance learning, sleep issues, body image, and relationship issues, to name just a few.  I also would like to encourage you to sign up for our QPR (Question-Persuade-Refer) Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training to learn how to help a friend or loved one who may have thoughts of suicide.  Suicide is an issue that affects our whole community; therefore, we all need to take steps to educate ourselves on how to recognize signs, to talk with others about it, and to encourage those who have these thoughts to seek appropriate help.  I would like to thank you again for checking us out.  I wish you the best of luck in the coming year as you pursue your academic and other goals.
