What to do in an Emergency
CAPS staff are available to students who are in crisis on a same-day basis. Either call us at 847-491-2151 to arrange a crisis appointment or walk over and tell the receptionist that you need to see the Crisis Counselor.
There is a Crisis Counselor available in person during regular business hours, Monday-Friday 8:30AM-5PM on the Evanston campus. A counselor can be made available on the Chicago campus with advance notice. Please be advised that if you do not call ahead, you may have a short wait for the Crisis Counselor if s/he is meeting with another student.
If you experience an after-hours emergency, please call 847-491-2151. Answering service personnel will contact a CAPS counselor who will speak with you on the phone. A CAPS counselor is available via phone 24 hours a day, year round.
If you think a student is out of control, violent, and/or is in a life-threatening situation, immediate intervention is needed. Examples include, but are not limited to, a student threatening suicide or homicide and a student physically harming her- or himself and/or others. Call the University Police at 911 (on campus) or 847-491-3456 in Evanston and 312-503-8314 in Chicago. Report your concern, the student’s name, and where the student can be found. If necessary, the University Police will escort the student to the nearest hospital emergency room.
CAPS staff are also available for campus-wide crises. Should there be a difficult situation that involves more than one student or system, there are a variety of services available. Faculty, staff, and administrators may consult with CAPS staff about difficult situations involving students about whom you may be concerned.
Parents are also welcome to consult with CAPS staff about their student if they have concerns. CAPS is required by law to keep counseling and relationships with clients confidential, but we can consult about how to approach various problems and concerns with your student and help you connect her/him to resources.
