Overview of class
This course is a two-quarter sequence in which each student focuses on directing a
short film of greater ambition and scale than is normally feasible to complete in a
single quarter, and which offers fuller preparation for directing feature films and
episodic television. In Fall quarter, students work on development, pre-production,
and conceptualization of the project, while in Winter quarter, they shoot and edit
the films. Class will center on presentations of screenplay drafts, design and
cinematography concepts and scene work in the fall, and screening of dailies,
assemblies, and rough cuts in the winter quarter. Evaluation will first focus on
the director's presentation of his or her concepts for storytelling through
visualization and performance, both in writing/documentation and through
participation in critique, and then will focus on execution of concepts through
shooting and post-production.Class Materials (Required)
