Family Stories, Memoirs and Diaries
- Carol Simpson Stern
- Annie May Swift Hall 103 - TuTh 2:00PM - 3:50PM
- The course draws heavily on materials gathered by the students on their own families as well as on memoirs of other writers. It develops an understanding of the genre of memoir and helps students to write and perform their own memoirs and those of others. Students are urged to use this summer to find materials from your own families---letters, visual representations, newspaper clippings, family movies and other historical materials, to share with the class and provide the basis of some of your own exploratory work as you create your performances. There will be three required graded performances and many exploratory performances and workshops. Depending on the richness of the materials provided by the class, we may delete or replace some of the required texts cited below. We discuss ethical issues related to performing family materials and quite personal texts.
- Cheever, Susan: HOME BEFORE DARK. Didion, Joan: THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING Dove, Rita. SELECTED POEMS Lewis, C. S. A GRIEF OBSERVED McElroy, Njoki. 1012 NATCHEZ: A MEMOIR OF GRACE, HARDSHIP, AND LOVE Oates, Joyce Carol. A WIDOW'S STORY Optional Text: Kerouac, Jack. ON THE ROAD: THE ORIGINAL SCROLL
