The central place that religion has held and continues to hold in human culture makes the study of religion indispensable. The Department of Religion within the College of Arts and Sciences is the center for the academic study of religion at Northwestern. The department advocates no particular religion but attempts to go beyond purely factual acquaintance with the subject to a sympathetic understanding of religion as the most pervasive form of culture in human life.

The department offers introductory courses such as Religion and the Human Experience, Old Testament, New Testament Origins, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. Undergraduates in any school of the University may enroll in these introductory courses. The department participates in the Freshman Seminar program offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.

The department is located at 1940 Sheridan Road, Evanston, Illinois, 847-491-5488.
