Director's Message

Northwestern University
's Center for Catalysis and Surface Science continues to perform as one of the premier institutes for catalysis in the world. Sponsorship by the Department of Energy for the Institute for Catalysis in Energy Processes (ICEP) is now in its sixth year. This research is characterized by elegant and detailed investigations of the synthesis, catalytic properties, and atomic structure of catalytic systems.

The Center is also a collaborative research partner with Argonne National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Frontier Research Center: Institute for Atom-efficient Chemical Transformations (IACT). This EFRC will pursue advanced scientific research on energy and use a multidisciplinary approach to address key catalytic conversions that could improve the efficiency of producing fuels from coal and biomass. IACT will focus on advancing the science of catalysis for the efficient conversion of energy resources into usable forms. IACT’s goal is to find ways to achieve control and efficiency of chemical conversions comparable to those in nature.

Center faculty participants have been recognized by national awards. All in all the past year has been exciting and productive.

We welcome your comments and the opportunity to interact with you on personal and intellectual levels.

Sincerely,

Peter C. Stair
