Introduction
There are a variety of NU alumni resources that may prove useful in your international job search. As with any job search, you can approach NU alumni to:
- learn more about a specific job field
- obtain information on specific programs or companies in which the alumni have worked
- start building your NU network in the city or country to which you would like to work
In addition to NU alumni resources, many programs like the Peace Corps and JET have well established alumni organizations. They can probably even help you find NU alumni who have participated in their specific programs. If you ever want more information on an international program, ask the program recruiter if you can have a list of alumni to contact. Speaking with alumni is an excellent way to verify a program's credibility.
Protocol
As with all networking opportunities, it is important that you are well prepared before you make first contact with alumni. You should know exactly why you are calling, make sure that you have contacted them at a time when it is convenient for them to speak with you, and make sure to follow-up with a thank you note.
During the course of your conversation, try to help them understand exactly what you are trying to pursue. If the alum cannot help you with your specific questions, you can politely ask them if they can refer you to a friend or colleague who may have more information.
