Steps and Resources for Choosing a Major

Here are some steps to help you gather and consider the information you need in order to make a satisfying major decision.

  1. Review Your Options
Get a list of all the majors, concentrations, and degree programs offered at Northwestern
  2. Gather Information
Pick up information on majors that interest you from the departments, the Department websites, or the Academic Advising Center Resource Library.
  3. Narrow Your Focus
Shorten your list of possible majors to a few that interest you the most.
  4. Ask Questions
Talk to faculty members, advisers, and other students enrolled in the majors you are considering. Find out the answers to these questions about each major you wish to consider.
  5. Try Out a Class or Course
Get permission to sit in on a class or two or take an intro class that also meets a distribution requirement.
  6. Declare Your Major
Each school at Northwestern has its own procedures for declaring a major.
You will need to learn the procedures for each school in which you wish to enroll.
  7. Make an Interschool Transfer if Necessary
The interschool transfer process at Northwestern University is the formalized means by which you change your enrollment from one school to another within the university. The staff at The Academic Advising Center can help you with this.
