Which Comes First?
Choosing a major can feel like a very big decision. Where
you should start to make your major decision will depend
on your answer to these questions:
Do you want to choose your major first and
then consider career paths later?
OR
Do you want to choose some potential careers
and
then consider what major(s) will prepare
you best for them?
Both choices will take you to the same place – a
major choice – but, the steps for each will be
a little different and in a different order.
Whichever you choose, there are a number of facts and factors that
may be contributing to your inability to decide right
now. Take
a moment to determine if any of the following are impeding
your choice.
A Quick Activity to Help Narrow Major Choices
You can quickly narrow down your major choices by
going to the Academic
Department.
All of the courses you take will be selected from
the 150 departments and disciplines available at Northwestern. In
the above list, each is listed with a link to a department
web page. To quickly narrow this list down:
- Print the list and eliminate those departments
that do not interest you.
- Learn more about each department that remains on
your list by visiting their websites and talking
to people in the department.
- Narrow your list to two or three areas.
- Sample classes from the departments on your list
- Talk to a career counselor or academic advisor.
