An Activity

 

Your values indicate what you consider to be most important in your life and are reflected daily in how you choose to use your time. What do you need in your work environment to make it feel satisfying? When you know your values, making decisions, including career decisions, will be easier.

    1. Print off this document. Consider the list of values below and underline or write down those that are important to you.
    2. If you think of others that are not on the list, feel free to add them.
    3. Place the words into groups based on those you think belong in the same category.
    4. Define the themes that each category represents and label them. These themes represent your true values.
    5. Rank order your values from high to low. Are your top values from varying themes or mostly from just a few themes? What about your lowest ranked values? These offer you clues for things to try to avoid.
    6. Think about careers you are considering. Do you think they will be compatible with your values? If you aren't sure, you may need to do more career research to find out. The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a good place to start.
