Summer Internship Grant Program (SIGP)
What is the Summer Internship Grant Program?
The Summer Internship Grant Program, an initiative spearheaded by student leaders,
University Career Services and Northwestern Alumni Association, provides a $2,000
stipend to intern during the summer at typically non-paid internships organizations.
These types of organizations include the Arts, Cultural Institutions, Humanities,
Entertainment, Marketing, Public Relations, Media, Journalism, Publishing, International
Human Rights, Foundations, Social Services, Legal and Advocacy Organizations,
Medical Research, Public Health, Public Policy and Political Candidates.
What is the value of the grant award and how many
will be awarded?
The internship grant award will be $2,000 for each
student accepted into the program. For summer 2009,
we will be providing internship grant awards to 30
students.
Who is Eligible?
- Northwestern University freshman, sophomores or
juniors (including rising seniors)
- Students whose summer internships are in traditionally
unpaid fields
- Students that are not receiving academic credit for internship
experience or are receiving 0.25 credits or less
- Students that will not receive any form of compensation/monetary
support from their internship employer, university departments,
and/or other funding sources

When is the application deadline?
April 10, 2009. Applications must
be submitted electronically via CareerCat IN FULL by
5:00 pm. Within 24 hours of the deadline, you
will be notified via email that your application has
been received. If you do not receive a confirmation
email by April 11, 2009, immediately contact r-garson@northwestern.edu.
When will I know if I have been accepted to the
Summer Internship Grant Program?
All students will be notified of their acceptance status by email on or before May
15, 2009.
What are the criteria used for accepting students
and awarding grants?
- Quality and content of application materials and essays
- Financial need – as rated by Financial Aid Office
- Ability to secure an unpaid internship – support
available for search process through UCS
What is required of students accepted into the Summer
Internship Grant Program?
- Meet with a UCS Internship Specialist (required
for students’ that do not yet have an internship)
- Attend mandatory orientation session
- Complete Internship Agreements and related paperwork
- Intern for a minimum of 250 hours during the summer (mid-June – September)
- Participate in on-line bi-weekly discussions about your
internship with students, alumni and UCS staff
- Write and submit a reflective paper (outline of content
will be provided)
- Participate in the SIGP Ambassador program during the
2009-2010 academic year (minimum of 3 hour commitment)
