Family and Youth Programs

The Block Museum offers programs to foster creative collaboration within families and nurture individual imagination in art making. Families can enjoy workshops, summer cinema, and other special family events. During the summer, the museum also offers special programs for summer youth and camp groups.

Family Programs

Pinhole Camera Family Workshop
Sunday, October 12, 2008, 1-3pm
Make your own camera! Learn how cameras work and create your own pinhole camera to capture an image. Get inspired with a tour of John Swope's amazing black and white photographs from Japan in the exhibition A Letter from Japan: The Photographs of John Swope .

$5/family for nonmembers, free for members.

To register, please email blockeducation@northwestern.edu with your name and the number of family members participating. Space is limited.

Summer Outdoor Movies

Block Cinema is proud to present a FREE outdoor film series each summer. Films are screened on Northwestern University’s lake front at dusk on Wednesday evenings. Check back here for updates on the 2009 schedue.

Summer Youth Programs

Summer youth groups and camps can enjoy tours and art-making programs at the Block Museum throughout the summer. See our full list of summer group programs below.

All Summer Youth Program reservations should be made no later than 3 weeks in advance. Click here for our Summer Group Visit Reservation Form or email blockeducation@northwestern.edu to have a form sent to you or for more information. All art materials are included in the price of tours.

Sculpture Garden Walk

Ages 5-12

Take a walk through the Block Museum’s Outdoor Sculpture Garden. Learn about three-dimensional art and create your own sketches and sculptures. This program lasts 60 minutes. Sculpture Garden Tours are available from April 1 – September 30. Sculpture Garden Tours are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather.

Maximum of 40 students. This program is FREE but requires reservations.

Gallery Activity Adventure

Ages 5-12

Youth groups will explore artworks and exhibition themes through an 80-minute gallery walk that includes a scavenger hunt and drawing activities. Groups will discover just how much fun art can be!

Maximum of 30 students, $10 per group.

Studio Session Workshop

Ages 5-12

This two-hour program includes a discussion-based gallery tour followed by a one-hour studio workshop that includes the creation of original artwork in response to the exhibition. Students work with Museum educators and artists to discuss artwork in the galleries and learn art-making techniques in the studio to create their own work.

Maximum of 30 students, $25 per group.
