Questions about ANUW

Who are we? The Association of Northwestern University Women was founded in 1988 by a group of women in senior administration committed to enhancing the career development of women at Northwestern. The group's current interests include building networks for the exchange of information, fostering a sense of community, and serving as role models and mentors for other women.

What do we do? ANUW collaborates with other organizations on campus such as the Women's Center; the Organization of Women Faculty; Northwestern University Staff Advisory Council (NUSAC); and Northwestern University Black Wimmin in Action (NUBIA). These collaborations include co-sponsoring special university-wide events, working on committees with central administration, and supporting improvements in the workplace.

Collaborative activities include:

  • Take Our Daughters to Work Day
  • NU Community Council
  • Women in Leadership Conference
  • Committee on Women in the Academic Workplace

What are the benefits and responsibilities of ANUW membership, and who is eligible for membership?
Members are entitled to make motions and vote on all issues and are eligible for elected or appointed positions. Members pay nominal dues. Less measurable, but equally important, is the informal networking and support that an association such as ANUW provides. All women staff of NU who hold exempt or non-exempt employee status are eligible to be active members of ANUW.

ANUW-sponsored Events
All members of the Northwestern community are welcome to attend events.
There are several different types of events sponsored by ANUW:

Brown Bag Lunch
Noontime talk held every March alternating between the Evanston and Chicago campuses featuring the Sr. Vice President, Finance and Administration.

Special Events
Usually these are afternoon events held in spring and summer at special sites. They may involve a tour, a speaker, or a collection to be viewed. These events introduce parts of the campus that members otherwise might not have a chance to visit. Recent events have been held at the Block Gallery, the Institute for Learning Sciences, and the renovated University Hall.

Annual Breakfast Meeting
Each fall, all members gather to conduct business and elect officers, and hear from internal/external professional women regarding their career experiences.

Networking Events
Each summer one informal event is designated for members to become better acquainted with each other and to learn about career opportunities in other areas of NU.

ANUW Newsletter
Two times a year a newsletter is mailed to all women staff. Included are highlights of future programs, career development suggestions, promotions and honors of NU women, and a calendar of upcoming events.
