Film: Balancing Act - Feb 3, 2006, 12 noon
The Buehler Center on Aging, Health & Society proudly presented: Balancing Acts on Friday, February 3, at 12 noon in the Buehler Center Conference Room. This film is the life story of Chicago resident Man-Fong Tong, who was born in China and trained in the traditional Chinese art of acrobatics. First going abroad as a performer at age 15, he toured and performed across Europe in the 1930s, including for leaders of Nazi Germany. In Sweden, he met and married his wife, a Hungarian vaudeville performer of Jewish background. Spending the war years in Hungary, he was able to protect her and their two sons by sharing his Chinese citizenship. After the war, Mr. Tong performed in the U.S. but his wife and children were not allowed to leave Hungary. The family was separated for 10 years, until Mr. Tong was able to bring his family to the U.S. as well. Mr. Tong, now in his 90s, was present for the screening along with one of his sons.
