Judith Rietjens

Judith Rietjens, a visiting scholar from the Netherlands, visited the Buehler Center for a few months on a Fulbright Scholarship and a Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) Scholarship. During her stay, she conducted a study about nurses’ experiences with and attitudes about palliative sedation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was advised by Dr. Hauser. Recently, she completed her thesis entitled, “End-of-life decision-making: Practices and attitudes of physicians and the general public.” The thesis includes studies about the practice of palliative sedation in the Netherlands and other European countries, and focuses on attitudes of Dutch physicians and the general pubic towards medical end-of-life decision-making. She also investigated attitudes of the Dutch public on what constitutes a good death.
