Joshua Hauser is an Assistant Professor in Medicine and Palliative Care, Assistant Director of the Buehler Center, Director of the Education Section and Associate Physician with the Education for Physicians on End of Life Care (EPEC) Project. He graduated from Harvard College in 1989 with an AB in Social Studies, from the University of Cambridge in 1990 with an M.Phil. in Philosophy and received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1995. After graduation from medical school, Dr. Hauser completed his residency in primary care internal medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston in 1998, and completed the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Clinical Scholars Program and a fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago in 2001. At Harvard, at the University of Chicago and at University of Illinois at Chicago, he helped to develop successful courses in end of life care, medical humanism and research ethics. His research interests are in understanding the experiences of family caregivers in palliative care and in evaluating professionalism in the teaching of palliative care. Clinically, he practices in the Palliative Care and Home Hospice Program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH). In professional organizations for internists and for bioethicists, Dr. Hauser holds leadership roles in advancing the cause of palliative care. He is now co-Chair for the Precourse selection committee of the Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Annual Meeting and runs the Palliative Medicine and Hospice Interest Group for the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities.
