  CDP launches planning phase

In late 2004 and early 2005, member institutions of the Consortium for Development Partnerships (CDP) will work together to design joint research and capacity-building projects in West Africa. The projects will include such priority issues as: Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness; Local Contexts of Conflict and Peacebuilding; and, Local Governance and Decentralization. For each of the projects, teams of researchers will convene to discuss how the Consortium can generate useful knowledge and strengthen institutional capacity. The outcome of this planning phase will be several project proposals that will guide CDP activities over the next four years. This initial phrase is supported by a planning grant from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, and by the MacArthur Foundation.

July 15-18, 2004
CDP Planning Conference, Eerbeek, the Netherlands

Representatives of 15 institutions in Africa, Europe, and the United States met to discuss the agenda and structure of a new initiative: the Consortium for Development Partnerships (CDP). Sponsored by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conference was convened to identify the priority issues that CDP should address within its three thematic areas: democracy and improving state capacity; private sector growth and poverty reduction; and regionalism and peace building. Paticipants also addressed questions of organizational structures, guiding principles, and strategies for achieving sustainibility and equality among members.

Conference on Governance and Insecurity in West Africa
Northwestern University, Evanston, IL

The three-day conference brought together scholars, civil society representatives, and policymakers to offer analysis of key issues and discuss recommendations for promoting economic and political development in West Africa. PAS organized panel discussions in which the conference’s presenters were asked to define the challenges facing the region and to explore strategies for overcoming them. The Governance and Insecurity in West Africa conference was the final major event under the rubric of the Program on International Cooperation in Africa (PICA), a successful PAS program funded by the MacArthur Foundation since 1989. The CDP will build on the foundation of PICA to engage Northwestern in productive, bridge-building activity on issues of importance to contemporary Africa.
