Program of African Studies: Africa Presence Week 2005

Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness, GHANA and NIGERIA

The project aims to reduce the barriers to agribusiness entrepreneurship in Ghana and Nigeria, and to encourage the kind of entrepreneurship that advances poverty alleviation. Through systematic study of the total value chain in the four commodities selected in Nigeria (sorghum and palm oil) and Ghana (cassava and Shea nuts), the project will deliver a practical analysis of:

  • the structural characteristics of the commodity value chain;
  • the barriers and obstacles to value generating entrepreneurial initiatives;
  • the opportunities for entrepreneurial ventures, structural mechanisms and policy instruments that could encourage such initiatives in agribusiness;
  • the methods through which such ventures can directly address poverty and livelihood issues; specific activities that could be undertaken by the corporate sectors in these countries to support entrepreneurial advancements.

It will be conducted by the University of Ghana (ISSER) and the University of Ibadan (Department of Agricultural Economics).
