Study Abroad
Northwestern has a strong tradition of undergraduate research
initiatives on the African continent and currently involves students in
study abroad programs in more than 10 African countries. Often
combining study at African universities with lived experience
of African urban and rural societies, these programs follow a
variety of research themes, such as diasporic history, Islam in
Africa, or the performing and visual arts. Others aim to involve
students in current issues, such as social justice and national
reconciliation, gender and development, HIV/AIDS and public health,
and ecology and development.
Possibilities for study and research include: the Gender, Health
and Development Program in Mali (SIT), the Council Study Center
Exchange Program at the University of Ghana (CIES), the Development and Social Change Program in Cameroon (SIT), the Culture and Society Program in Madagascar
(SIT), the Arabic Language and Moroccan Culture Program in Morocco (SIT), the Arts
and Culture Program in Senegal (SIT), the Community Health Program in South Africa (SIT), the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation
Program in Tanzania (SIT), and direct enrollment in courses or
programs at the American University in Cairo.
26 Programs for study abroad in Africa exist through the School of International Training (SIT). For more information, visit http://www.sit.edu/studyabroad/index.html.
Northwestern also has programs on Global Healthcare, Public Health and Teaching in South Africa and Uganda.
